TOMATO volver

The tomato is native to the lower Andes and was cultivated by the Aztecs. It was introduced in Spain in the 16th century by the Spanish conquerors thanks to the travels of Colón.

Tomato is nutritious, low caloric and contains large amounts of vitamin C and folic acid, in addition to its antioxidant properties.

The tomato adapts to many types of soils, climates and cultivation, which make its varieties infinite. In the Marina Alta there are no big productions, but a great tradition of family and recreational cultivation.

The best time to grow it is from March to June. The most common is sowing in late winter or early spring. It is a crop that requires a lot of sun, abundant water and many nutrients. The harvest is collected between 10 and 12 weeks after planting.

Today it is a basic culinary ingredient in much of Europe, essential in salads, sauces and all kinds of stews. In our area the preparation of the popular"tomacat" stands out.
